MSTC’s Diabetes Program offers services and activities alongside other local, state and national agencies in the area to promote health awareness and/or diabetes prevention.
Program Goal:
Continue to improve the ability of community members to recognize signs of diabetes with an emphases on prevention, awareness and healthy lifestyle changes.
Objective:
Continue to educate our communities about Diabetes recognition and prevention measures
Activities:
- Provide knowledge for our community to prevent Diabetes in children born to mothers with diabetes during pregnancy
- Provide education and prevention of Diabetes in local schools
- Cooperate with the other health providers in the villages; promote healthier lifestyle choices that improve diet and increase exercise
- Assist with local Health Fair Projects
- Maintain exercise equipment in good working order
- Promote regular exercise by local community members through media and educational programs
- Procure shoes for diabetics who have foot problems or that are at risk for further problems with their feet
- Purchase healthy snacks for local children during after school or community events
- Provide education to preschoolers about healthy eating
- Work directly with the Alaska Native Service Hospital Diabetes Department to improve communications, education, and recognition of high-risk individuals
- Provide pedometers to community members to encourage more active exercise
- Screen children as well as elders for signs of Diabetes as well as “Pre- diabetes”
- Promote healthy exercise, activities, and healthy food choices
- Promote weight loss
