Lena Charley grew up in the Twin Lakes and Nabesna Bar area of the Copper River Vally. She moved to Chistochina Village in the 1950's so that her children could attend school. Long concerned about the transmission of traditional knowledge, she began teaching her language in that school during the winter of 1999. Her translation for the booklet, Chistochina Ahtna Basic Language Lessons was the first Native Language book produced for Chistochina Village.
